Robot solves Rubik’s cube in 3 seconds

This weekend the CUBESTORMER 3 robot (built using LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3) set an awesome new world record, solving a Rubik's cube in only 3,253 seconds! The record is not only faster than previous record holder, the CUBESTORMER II robot, but also faster than the fastest human time of 5,55 seconds!

It was on Saturday March 15th that visitors to Big Bang Fair in Birmingham, U.K, could witness the robot (built by Mike Dobson and David Gilday using LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3, LEGO Technic and a smartphone) set the new mindblowing 3.253 second record, check it out for yourselves in this Youtube clip:

So how does it work? It’s all very clever! The smartphone acts as “the brain” of the robot. It uses a app that that uses the camera to make note of what the scrambled cube looks like, then it sends instructions to eight LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 P-Bricks, which then in turn manipulate the arms of the robot to move the cube!

Think building a Rubik-solving robot of your own would be cool? David, one of the masterminds behind the CUBESTORMER 3 explains how to build a starter MindCub3r model in this clip, check it out

You can also read more about it on the MindCub3r website (mindcuber.com), where you can also find free building and programming instructions

Good Luck!
